How to design a cybersecurity strategy for IoT?
The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the way we live and work. It is an enabler of a new industrial revolution, Industry 4.0, and key in the digital transformation of our economy and society. Companies increasingly adopt Internet of Things (IoT) devices to enable business operations, improve productivity and reduce costs in healthcare, enterprises, industry, retail, and government sectors. The total amount of Internet of Things (IoT) devices worldwide is projected to be 30.9 billion units by 2025. But despite all the benefits of making a business smart, there is one thing to consider: smart does not mean secure by nature. Many IoT devices are not designed or maintained with security as a priority. Studies have shown that 57 % of IoT devices are vulnerable to medium or high-severity attacks. Cyberattacks have already harmed several businesses, including critical infrastructures such as hospitals, data centers, and hotels. In the rush to make everything internet enabled and smart, security can sometimes be overlooked, and businesses have to ensure that someone isn’t creating or opening a door for attackers. How can companies prevent cybercrime and cyberterrorism that could disrupt the system and take it down when everyone’s connected?
